FRANKENMUTH, MI, August 1, 2005—The European Union (EU) has adopted a directive called the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) which will restrict the use of certain substances in electrical and electronic products. The presence of Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, and the flame-retardants PBB and PBDE will be severely restricted in products that are new to the market as of July 1, 2006.
Memtron Input Components is committed to providing services that meet our customer’s requirements. Included in this commitment is the ability to design and manufacture RoHS compliant products when specified. A compliance task force has been formed and given the responsibility of ensuring that RoHS requirements can be met. More specifically, the task force implements and tracks company-wide processes and procedures necessary to provide RoHS compliant product.
Memtron Input Components has the ability to design and manufacture RoHS compliant products. This includes collaboration with our supply chain partners to ensure that all content making up our finished product is compliant. Due to the custom nature of our end product, each individual component within a Bill of Materials is evaluated for compliance.
There remains considerable uncertainty in the industry on how the RoHS directive is to be interpreted. It is the responsibility of the brand name seller (OEM) to determine compliance requirements and communicate that to Memtron Input Components. Although Memtron Input Components will provide input to our customers on how to interpret the directive, that input does not represent legal advice and is presented without warranty as to accuracy. The costs and lead times associated with developing a design and producing a product to be RoHS compliant will be negotiated with the customer prior to initiation of work on the project.
Memtron Input Components encourages customers to evaluate the impact of RoHS and similar legislation on their product as early as possible. All designs that are affected by the directive should be specified as such at the earliest opportunity. It is critical that sufficient time be available to research such materials, complete designs, and procure materials in support of the compliance date.
